Summer Vibes

Being in Cedarville over the summer has been quite the trip. 2020 in general, has been quite the trip. From viruses, to social unrest, to finishing out a degree and a semester online, there’s been a lot to keep up with. Something I’ve realized that I’m passionate about that I didn’t think of before is how our culture interacts with personal suffering..

Anyone with a computer or a cell phone in 2020 knows about all the social unrest going on in the country right now. It’s all over the news, social media, movies, music, and TV shows; it’s all over the place because it’s a big deal. Something I really don’t appreciate, however, is how sensationalized it’s become. Without realizing it, almost everyone in my personal circles has started to forget about the protests and the riots and has begun moving on to whatever else we had going on in the first place.

For me, it’s hard to see so many people act as if everything going on in the country right now is simply over because some police officers got indicted. And I know that protests and campaigns are still going on, and I’m really happy about that. The sad fact is, though, that those protests are being replaced with new news, new music, new social media, and we’re slowly forgetting what we promised not to forget.

I don’t necessarily have a solution for this, and I know that I’m also prone to putting aside some of these issues and focusing on my own desire for more positive “summer vibes”… I just wish that people would acknowledge that if the response is so short-winded every single time, our black brothers and sisters will have no choice but to keep re-igniting the flames every time something like this happens. Wouldn’t it be easier to truly address this problem and start our journey toward moral equality and a more positive understanding of race?

Just my random Thursday thoughts..
